Two hours later Mamma went to sleep for the last time. I don’t know if God heard my prayer, but I was glad He took her. I felt a great…void all through my body, like something had been sucked out of me. It wasn’t just empty, it was painfully empty. I wanted to cry so bad, but Zeppe was crying his heart out. He needed me. And Maria was crying, and even a few of the neighbors. With everyone crying, they didn’t need my tears.

Zeppe’s head was in my lap and Maria leaned against my shoulder. As I tried to console them, I wondered where Papà was. I couldn’t imagine how he’d feel when he came home.
